I'm leaning way to yay. At the time I was a little post-punk new wave so & so, and was supposed to dislike them. These days I'd kill or die for such pure pop.

Speak up!

people hate on it like they hate on the 80's but i say yay, being a musician i know for a fact they were very creative and had a strong thing going not to mention how many albums they sold and concerts they rocked.

    yayyyyy

I'm going to have to go with a big ass yea. Come on...it's almost impossible to not sing along to their songs when they come on the radio.

OK, we have three unequivocal yea's. Anyone else wanna be counted?

I got a two disc set of theirs last week and was red-lining it for days at work. In addition to the huge hits there were some surprises, songs that have actually improved with time. There was one more obscure Private Eyes-era single called Your Imagination that, with a different vocal track, could pass for something contemporary like Franz Ferdinand.

RICK, I bow to you. You have passed your H2O SATs with flying colors. However, had you quoted some INXS lyrics (instead of the Police) as H2O, I mighta gone apeshit.

It's like, "leave me alone, I'm a family man! if you push me to far I just might..."

ok, now i have a question...why apeshit if it was inxs?

                  what if it was wham!?

If it was Wham!, then that would have been a Careless Whisper.

Had it (mistakenly) been INXS, on the other hand, Danger, that would've been an Original Sin and put The Devil Inside, devil inside, every single one of us, the devil inside...

                    And who needs that?

hall and oates is the most played out group since the bee gees and kenny loggins. the music of the three mentioned are of a time come and gone and will be remembered of that era.

i think it comes down to their intentions. i don't know the intentions of these guys, but they certainly aimed to dominate a business in its time and take the money and run instead of create a work that will be enjoyed for generations despite what notoriety it acclaims while they're famous.

their music has a price tag and an expiration date. that's all i can say about hall and oates.

frank zappa on the other hand..

Ah, you're probably a Seals and Crofts fan. Or England Dan And John Ford Coley. This is the 80s tribe, not the Loggins And Messina Pooh Corner Macrame tribe.

Besides which, Hall And Oates & Zappa are not homogenous. It's like comparing bananas to starfruit.

Once H&O had a taste of Pop stardom (Sara Smile, She's Gone), they did put out some records that weren't so commercial. As a big fan, I would say that if you took the time to listen to the records "Beauty on a Back Street" or "Along the Red Ledge" (which didn't have any "hits"), you would find "a work that will be enjoyed for generations".

As far as their more commercial work, there are thousands of people who were able to craft a "one hit wonder" song, but to be able to do it over and over again is a testament to their genius. I can't tell you the last time I heard a Zappa song on the radio, but not a week goes by that I don't hear an H&O's song.

I also had the privilege of seeing H&O live in a small nightclub many times in the late '70s, early '80s. They always had a great band (G.E. Smith on guitar) and put on an amazing show.

It what way? Looks? Maybe. Telent? No way. Are you refering to when he was the band leader on SNL? He did come off a little creepy then.

But the guy can flat out play. He was with Bowie and H&O for years- and he was married to Gilda Radner.

Yeah, see, back when he was just the Lurch-looking guy in H2Os band, I found his stage presence tolerable. But on the SNL cutaways he was constantly mugging, wincing, flipping his hair and generally over-doing the whole guitar-god pose. Okay, he never played the same classic-guitar twice, so some of it was admittedly envy. But (as a guitarist myself), I was embarrassed by his constant stink-facing, his hystrionic grimaces always crossing the line from "ain't this a bad-ass lick" to "damn, did someone just take several mujungous dumps on the stage?".

But you, Skip, you're for real. You knew he was married to Gilda and that's some deeply obscure 80s trivia. It also speaks to the possibilities that he must've had his hidden charms.

Yeah, Agent J, I have to agree with you. Well written and funny too. Nice to hear someone defend his or her opinion w/o resorting to attacking.

I had given up on SNL by the time G.E. was leading the band, but I did catch it once in a while. So I guess his mugging on TV at that time didn't diminish for me the memory of his live performances. I even once saw a great concert at The Old Waldorf in SF (next to The Punchline) in about '80 or '81, with Syl Sylvain opening, G.E. Smith as the second act and Squeeze as the headliners.

And Gilda, god I loved her (Candy Slice!), so I followed her career too.

But back to H&O please- four years ago I was sharing a house with some friends in Marin. One of them mentioned that she liked H&O, but didn't have any of their music. I found the H&O Greatest Hits Part 1 in a used record store for .99 cents. We wore that record out over the summer. Nothing like a good Pop song blasting on the stereo, a couple o' Margaritas and a hot summer night. Unfortunately, now I live in Pacifica.

So, nay? Fair enough, though I find "the rest was crap" to be a rather broad statement.

Also, you use too many periods in your ellipses, a common internet excess. Three are all you need, like...

Big Yay to Hall and Oates! I saw them live (my very first live concert) and I thought they were great. They have a lot of talent. They can do pop, rock, and soul all pretty good. Sure their stuff can get boring if you have the attention span of a 3-year old. But if you appreciate good songs by good songwriters who can sing them, you'll like Daryl and John.
